We spent last week with Breakdown Tours<\/a><\/strong> at the Pannonia Fields, in Nickelsdorf, Austria, at NOVA ROCK<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> – surrounded by hard rock and heavy metal music, towering wind turbines, and icons of Modern Mythology: from Rise Against to Iggy Pop, from Linkin Park to Slipknot, from Electric Callboy to Powerwolf, opening up a thousand worlds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond the music that powerfully filled the bodies, souls, and vocal cords of over 250,000 people for four days, Modern Mythology filled our days starting with the T-shirts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An emblem of metal fashion, the T-shirt is more than just a garment: it\u2019s a manifesto, a flag, a trophy to wear<\/strong>. Festival tees and band shirts are ways to declare belonging, musical taste, and worldview. And even though the iconography in these worlds is often seen as dark, aggressive, or mystical, it actually represents an incredible religious syncretism – probably an apotropaic gesture – much like the depictions of animals, demons, and deities in ancient caves<\/strong>: skulls, spirits, monsters, runic symbols, upright or inverted crosses, dragons, apocalyptic landscapes, wild animals, dances of death\u2014they move beyond cotton to the skin, reminding us forever that fears, especially the fear of death, can be faced<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amidst all this, there\u2019s even room for characters from comics, anime, and video games<\/strong> \u2014 and not necessarily just in black tones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Metal fashion has very recognizable codes<\/strong>: black dominates, often paired with details in red, white, or silver to create contrast and give strength to the look.
Ripped jeans, studded leather jackets, denim vests full of patches (often hand-sewn) from favorite bands or events attended, spikes, chains, wide belts, combat boots\u2026 and of course long, loose hair\u2014symbols of freedom and rejection of bourgeois rules\u2014along with dreadlocks and shaved cuts.
And then, indispensable hoodies, caps, countless patches, pins, socks\u2026 even custom underwear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Needless to say, some artists and bands have made their look almost a trademark<\/strong>: if Iggy Pop can\u2019t keep his shirt on for more than half a minute, Powerwolf arrive dressed as bishops, cardinals, and monks with theatrical makeup and beasts in the background. Emily from Linkin Park offers a style mixing rock attitude with modern streetwear touches, very much aligned with the \u201cnu metal\u201d aesthetic, while Slipknot wear unique, eerie, grotesque masks, gray work overalls with the \u201cS\u201d triskele, the band\u2019s logo, numbers identifying each member, gloves, chains, wide belts, and heavy boots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the meanwhile, outside the scene, metal has influenced mainstream fashion<\/strong>: designers like Rick Owens and Hedi Slimane have drawn inspiration from this aesthetic. And it\u2019s no coincidence that vintage metal tees are now worn by pop stars and fashion icons alike\u2014from Rihanna to Justin Bieber to Kendall Jenner.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
