Due to his muscular and warlike nature, Thor can be associated with the god Ares/Mars, but his ability to manipulate lightning also links him to Zeus/Jupiter.
Marvel Comics owns the character Thor.
Ares/Mars was the god of war and courage, feared for his violent and brutal nature, in contrast with his half-sister Athena, who represented the more strategic aspects of warfare. He was the protector of warriors, battles, and the city of Sparta.
Unlike Ares, who was mainly seen as a destructive and destabilizing force, Mars represented military power as a means of ensuring peace and was considered the father (pater) of the Roman people.
Symbols: shield, spear, wolf, vulture.
Trivia: He was the legitimate son of Zeus and his wife Hera; twin brother of Eris, goddess of discord. He was in love with Aphrodite, with whom he had numerous children. He had many lovers, among whom stand out Otrera, one of the queens of the Amazons, and Rhea Silvia, with whom, according to Roman mythology, he fathered Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome.
Thor, unlike other superheroes inspired by gods and legendary heroes, is simply… himself!
When he was created for issue No. 83 of Journey into Mystery in 1962, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby drew heavily from Northern European mythology, translating the epic deeds of the gods of Asgard into comic form. As a result, not only was Thor, the god of thunder, reimagined with a pop aesthetic destined to become iconic, but also his father Odin, his half-brother Loki, and all the extraordinary creatures worshipped by the Vikings became part of the Marvel Universe.
The mighty Thor is incredibly strong and determined, and with his hammer Mjölnir he commands lightning and storms.
Symbols: hammer, helmet, goats.
Trivia: In English, the days Tuesday and Thursday correspond to Mars and Jupiter in the Latin tradition, but their names instead derive from Germanic culture and are linked to the gods Týr and Thor respectively—gods of single combat and thunder.
